Filmmaker George Spyros has distinguished himself both as an award-winning director and as someone who can use “creative” and “corporate” to describe the same production. That talent found him behind the camera recently, directing hours of digital video footage for Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Inc.
The project, authored in DVD Studio Pro, resulted in nearly 17,000 replicated DVDs for Pfizer, the maker of Celebrex, Viagra, Zoloft and other prescription drugs, as well as over-the-counter products such as Listerine, Rolaids and Visine. It also cemented the filmmaker’s fondness for the “movie on a disc” genre.
“My passion as a filmmaker is working with longer formats, so DVD is a natural fit,” says Spyros, president of Big City Pictures Inc., a media design and production company in New York City. “DVD delivers full-screen, gorgeous video, comparable to a feature film. It provides the elongated pleasure of feature-length video at full-screen resolution.”

DVD: An Rx for Training
The Pfizer project directed by Spyros is an impressive example of his company’s DVD design and authoring services. Each of Pfizer’s 8,000 U.S. sales reps receives two DVDs with four hours of training materials on how to use Pfizer computer systems, processes and applications. A third DVD addresses the needs of Pfizer district managers.
The DVD format lets Pfizer employees access information quickly and easily from a company-issued laptop, whether they’re in the office or on the road visiting physicians. The content is essentially a portable version of two-day training sessions held at the Learning Center in Rye, N.Y.
To replicate the live learning environment, Spyros plucked three instructors from Pfizer’s pool of trainers and put them in front of the camera. He also matched the set design to the video interface, resulting in coordinated colors, menu screens and overall look and feel.
With the training on DVD, Pfizer can save considerable time and cost because sales reps will need fewer live refresher courses. The DVD format also spares sales reps from having to call Pfizer’s help center if they encounter a technical problem with their contact-tracking software, have a question about how to report expenses, or need help identifying the IR port on a handheld device. DVD users can click on a list of topics and sub-topics, then go directly to the five-minute segment of video they want to view. Early reports from Pfizer sales reps indicate that the layout and views make it very easy to find the information they need.
