• We Did It: The Beautiful Life: TBL Red Carpet

The cast of The Beautiful Life are generous and playful. They were great sports for modeling for the camera so we could get head-to-toe shots of their designer outfits: Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, and on….

We shot with two Hi-Def cameras (a Sony EX1 and a Panasonic HVX200) to capture all the glam goings-on. We supplemented the stage lights with two Litepanel 1×1 SuperSpot LED lighting units using one down low as a “shoe light” to fill in when we tilted down. While the a-camera was on sticks, DP Pierrot Colonna’s snap zooms on both b-roll and talent interviews provided visual cutting points for upcutting the dialogue. DP Rob Featherstone made sure we could get a word in from Demi Moore going handheld, jumping into the thick of the fray.

We posted on Final Cut Pro 6 & 7 creating flow with music cues as well as by grouping the sound bites into sections:

    1. Intro
    2. Tell us about your character
    3. Your character’s style
    4. How does your own style compare with your character’s
    5. What are you wearing this evening
    6. Your favorite costume so far
    7. tag out

While the cutting in sections 3 and 4 slow a bit allow us to spend time with the talent, 5 drops in specific broll shots of talents’ clothes via split screens, while 6 & 7 use checkerboard editing to pump up the flow toward the end.
