BigCityPix: What We Did
BCP shot a whole mess of footage for use in the promotion of the second season of the reality show ArtStar for the Gallery HD Channel, one of the VOOM HD Networks. The good folks in the promos department began to use our footage by cutting together a series of six contestant bios.
BigCityPix: How We Did It
The goal was to present the artist-contestants discussing themselves and their work. The location provided was an not so cinematic white room, unforch. So we did what any practical but aesthetically-minded team would do: we blacked out the windows, dimmed the Kino Flos and fired-up the old video projector. This set-up allowed us to
• see on screen often very small pieces of art blown-up heroically behind each artist
• run through all six contestants in one, long day of shooting
• provide a consistent and unified look for all six subject while also varying camera position
• lay the dolly track once with only minor tweaks needed throughout the shoot
• have time to shoot specialty, beauty footage of each artist both while speaking and as portrait shots
Director of Photography Marcus Burnett used the Panasonic HVX200 with Cinevate’s Brevis 35mm Lens Adapter combined with Nikon prime still camera lenses. Slo motion was 48 frames-per-second. We rented from Xeno Lights a skateboard dolly on two pieces of straight plus one piece of curved track allowing us to blow through coverage on a tight day.
