I’ll Try Anything Once, Episode 5: Lumberjack Competition
In this episode, urban culture and music expert Touré heads far into the woods in Northern Wisconsin to spend four days pursuing the sporting side of one of America’s most dangerous jobs – lumberjack. Under the guidance of world champion Chris Fischer, Toure learns the ins and outs of, then competes in, the rough and tumble world of competitive timber sports. From log rolling to axe throwing, Toure certainly sharpens his skills, but how will they serve him in the episode finale – a competition against some of the best timber sport titans?
Touré’s Real World Tip
If you ever find yourself forced with having to do a little boom-running keep in mind that it’s kindof like river dancing in that you want to keep your lower body in quick motion while your upper body stays still so as not to change your balance. But who am I to give you advice on running the boom? Out of 100 plus tries I got all the way across just three times. (And I’m proud of every single one.)
Touré’s Journal Entry
This was the first episode in which I actually got hurt. I walked away limping, moving very slowly through the airport on the way home. See, we spent a lot of time in and around the pool in the backyard of my mentor Chris Fischer. He’s a champion log roller. His brother’s a champion log roller. Both of them have sons and/or daughters who are champion log rollers and champion boom runners – which is running across six logs that are laid end to end in the water. The pool was built so the Fischers could practice logrolling and boom running while Chris’s father Harold, a pioneering log roller and a legendary trick roller, watched the sport spread down through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harold built the pool with Fischers in mind, ie, with champs in mind.
But I was there to learn these sports and learning requires failing and I fell into the water over and over, 50 or 60 times a day for three days. At the bottom of the somewhat shallow pool are lots of little rocks. So my heels repeatedly crashed against the rocks on the bottom of the pool. And my feet ended up banged and battered and super sore. Also one of the many times I fell into the water one of my spikes jabbed into my ankle and cut me open. You should also know that logrolling and boom running are summer sports and we shot this in October in Wisconsin. The water was very cold. And I know that dipping in and out of the icy water over and over contributed to the stiffening of both ankles. I limped home trying to keep from coming down hard on my ankles, trying to keep from aggravating the open sore on my ankle, trying to shake some life in my slowly defrosting ankles.
