Stereo equipment billionaire Sidney Harman has purchased Newsweek from the Washington Post for the bargain basement price of $1. He’ll be assuming $70 million dollars in debt, but hey, this the founder of Harman Kardon (which pioneered the now well-known consumer electronics practice of selling separate components to be custom-tailored into a home sound system AND brought the world the first hi-fi receiver) as well as Harman International — so, hey maybe he’s on to something. Jon Meacham will be out as Newsweek editor.

Laura Poitras’ The Oath shares a distinction with many of the films of our mentor Emile de Antonio in that it is one of the rare, definitive films of and for its time. We’d go so far as to call The Oath the definitive, historical documentary on America in the first decade of the 21st Century. Like the films of DeAntonio, who is credited with removing the god-like voice-over of documentary and for reordering “scenes” out of chronological sequence for maximum impact (e.g. Point of Order), Poitras’ film stands on the material she gathers. The footage is structured beautifully, gently unfolding a powerfully rich film-viewing experience. We suggest just seeing the film. Don’t watch trailers and clips, just watch and enjoy the breathless experience of truth laid bare, humbly at your feet.

After watching the film, you might want to check out the video above where Poitras talks about how she came to make the film. And in a New York Times article, Poitras elucidates further some of what we see as the key strengths of The Oath. Poitras calls her filmmaking approach “micro-macro…following an individual story to look at the bigger questions.” Other key nuggets from the NYT piece:

Without looking for him, Ms. Poitras had stumbled upon an ideal subject for her film: “Someone who intersects in so many ways with the post-9/11 universe,” she said….

While most political documentaries are only too eager to tell the viewer what to think, “The Oath” keeps the expectations and sympathies of audiences in provocative flux….

In the largely progressive world of American political documentaries, Ms. Poitras said: “I knew I was making a film that wasn’t going to be easily messaged. It doesn’t fit into an easy story, something we can rally around and use as a symbol of what’s wrong with the war on terror.”

Pop over to the website of the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting (MOFTB) and the header banner as well as the Mission Statement proudly proclaim NYC as a one-stop shop for all production needs in New York City, including “free permits, free exterior locations and free police assistance.” Well the word “free” before the word “permits” may soon be making its final curtain call. The cause of the exeunt is the city’s budget woes causing city agency heads to look for new ways to drum up extra cash.

For the first time ever films, commercials, music videos and television series productions shooting in NYC will have purchase City Hall permits that have been free since the MOFTB was established in 1966. The Bloomberg administration today summoned representatives from Hollywood studios, advertising and labor unions to inform them of the proposed $300 fee. Other cities such as Los Angeles already charge permit fees ($625 for two weeks) and the NYC charge would be required once for every movie, commercial or music video shoot, no matter how many days the production was working in the city, and once a season for television projects. New York requires a permit for shoots using vehicles or equipment other than hand-held and tripod-mounted cameras as well as to gain the exclusive use of city property.

The fee likely would raise less than $1 million a year, but still significant to the film and television office’s relatively small $2 million budget. The city’s budget is about $60 billion.

The overall industry is a $5 billion-a-year business in New York, employing more than 100,000 people and buoyed up by the Made in NY incentive program.

Daily News catches on to the dishing begun Sunday on a TBL Facebook page that the CW will be airing the remaining shows for the Ashton Kucher-produced show that was canceled after just two shows.

CW spokesman Paul McGuire, however says that “Beautiful” fans shouldn’t set their hopes or their DVRs to “record series” just yet: “The status of unaired episodes has yet to be determined.” McGuire also noted that the Facebook page is not officially connected to the network.

The article goes on to talk about Micha sightings where she looks like she’s in better shape ostensibly because the additional shows are going on the air next summer.
