The director of photography (DP or DoP in European and some international parlance) is the chief over the camera and lighting crews working on a film or digital production, responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image. In filmmaking, the term cinematographer is applied to this crew member who is literally photographing with a motion picture camera (the art and science of which is known as cinematography).
The Assistant Camera works very closely with the DP.
