    In 2000, Johnson directed a surf film entitled Thicker than Water with his film school friend Chris Malloy. The film features breaks from Indonesia, Tahiti, India, Ireland, France, Australia, and Hawaii, and Johnson provides various rhythms for the soundtrack, with some appearances being performed by G. Love & Special Sauce. Two years later, Johnson also directed another film entitled The September Sessions.

    ::TRANSCRIPT::
    Jack Johnson: As a kid, surfing all the time, going on camping trips with my family and you know, mountain biking and stuff like that and having a love of nature. At that time, it just seemed like this was my reality, you know outside a lot. And when I got to a certain age, especially once I started to gather a crowd then it seemed really obvious to start playing fundraisers for Surfrider Foundation or Heal the Ocean and different groups that I could support.

    And it was usually about ocean quality because these are the groups that I knew and people that were working in them. And then it slowly expanded out where we started working with groups as we toured and things in different places. You meet these people and you think, “Wow, they’re doing great things. I want to support that.” And we would raise money for them and we would create friendships and then we started talking about things and I’d learn more and more. Yeah, there’s a song on the new record that talks about, “all life is in one drop of the ocean.”

    But definitely, water quality is really important to me, just like it would be to anybody. I read you know, somebody had a nice quote that said, “If you like clean air and clean water then you are an environmentalist.” So in that sense, everybody is an environmentalist. But the ocean holds a special place in my heart from all the surfing. I guess I have a certain amount of respect from it for the ocean from surfing bigger waves. And they kind of remind you of how small you are. All that force, it definitely shrinks your ego a little bit.
