Smartphone Cameras Cannibalize Point-and-Shoot Sales
No surprise to us that NYT is reporting that point-and-shoot cameras are falling into disfavor amongst consumers, photo enthusiasts, as well as professional photographers. Bottom line is that a device such as an iPhone 4
1) has a megapixel camera rivaling many point-and-shoot cameras (you may want to shoot your entire wedding using iPhone 4s)
2) is always with you in your pocket and not back home on a shelf when you need it and
3) sharing photos through social networks or e-mail is a much easier, less technical process.
One person interviewed in the article is quoted as saying “It’s much easier to share those pictures with my friends… With my point-and-shoot, I have to plug it into my computer and upload the photos. It’s just a few more steps than I want to take.”
Cannibalization in the pocket-camera sector seems to be running in parallel with the downward sales trends of notebook computers. Just recently, notebook sales negative growth figures were charted by Fortune with iPad shouldering at least some of the blame while Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn was quoted as saying that “internal estimates showed that the iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs, especially netbooks, by as much as 50%.” All of this seems to be fulfillment of Steve Jobs’ vision. Last summer the Apple CEO had some choice predictions about the eclipse of the PC by the likes of iPads and mobile smartphone devices.
As for the video included with the article which we have embedded above, we’ve got a note of constructive criticism for the producers over at The Times for improving the intended comedic effect of the clip. Early on when Times author Sam Grobart is doing a romantic break-up scene with his point-and-shoot camera, literally talking to the inanimate gadget, the video should cut a couple of times to the camera just sitting there. As if it had something to say it were in shock. To which Grobart would then “respond” to what was “said” by the camera in that shot. High-larity. Or at least just our 2-cents.
