URBAN INSIGHT is a series of vignettes following TreeHugger.com founder Graham Hill as he explores the visionary ideas making New York City a better place to be. On a quest to share green solutions found in NYC that can be easily replicated in communities elsewhere, Graham brings viewers along as he plants crops on a 1,000-square-foot rooftop farm, flips eggs on the griddle of a sustainable bodega and braves hives of honeybees tended by the urban beekeeper known simply as “Bee Man.”

Looks like we’re off to the (bike) races again with our old friend Graham Hill, Founder of TreeHugger.com The development team at Discovery’s Planet Green Channel have turned to Big City to produce as series of on-air interstitials centered around reproducible, medium-sized green solutions being implemented in New York City. Jack Johnson’s advice to people who are getting overwhelmed with the static –

Johnson’s 2008 tour is collaborating with groups around the world working in the realms of water quality, community & school gardens, land preservation, environmental education and more. Several nonprofits in each city will host volunteer events leading up to the show and will use donated concert tickets to leverage new members or raise funds for their projects. Participating nonprofits will interact with fans at the concerts in the “Village Green,” with the goal of raising awareness about local issues and engaging community action. National and local non-profits will be involved at every show and tour proceeds will be directed to these groups to support their ongoing projects.

2008 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT GOALS: Impact will be tracked throughout Johnson’s 2008 world tour to demonstrate how collective action can result in significant change. An end-of-tour report will be available at www.jackjohnsonmusic.com. The campaign is quantifying individual actions, including:

# of voters registered (United States)
Tons of CO2 reduced as a result of tour efforts
# of people participated in local events & projects leading up to the concert
# of actions taken and pledged to be taken
# of companies encouraged to take stronger climate change measures
# plastic bags and water bottles displaced by reusables
Pounds of waste recycled/composted at the venues
Dollars raised for local non-profits

Jack Johnson: Joyful participation. Joseph Campbell talks about it and it’s accepting the way things are and not looking back and saying, “the good old days” because it, you know now is as good as any time, and not looking at the future and saying there is something that is going to solve everything.

I think just joyfully participating even when we do get overwhelmed about things. It’s definitely meant a lot to me, the joyful participation because I see people getting overwhelmed. And sometimes they get completely consumed with the problems and that’s a problem in itself because when you are consumed with something you really don’t have any room to make change. It’s kind of consuming you and so you can’t help to it’s all going this way instead of being able to go out.
